Topic will be English language! at English Conversation – Friday June 23

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

You have been learning and practicing English. Wonderful! But what *is* English? Where did it come from? How much is English like other languages? Answers to these questions and more will be revealed this Friday.

Come practice your English, and learn about American culture at English Conversation this Friday June 23 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the home of:

Bo and Cherry Breland
2242 Palm Hills Boulevard, 70809

2234 Palm Hills 70809

You can drive yourself or ask for a ride. Important note = Please contact us (email works best) by Thursday if you want to come to English Conversation and need a ride. We will pick you up at one of our bus stops (see list below) only if someone says “I need a ride, please pick me up”. We will not go to every stop on this list. Remember that everyone is welcome and we are happy to pick people up… but people must tell us they plan to come and need a ride.

  • Extremely important! Note new and updated times when we can stop to pick up people! The “old” schedule has too much time between some of the stops. We almost never go to Edward Gay apartments (no one who lives there needs a ride).
    • Boone (next to Place du Plantier apartments) at 6:55 p.m.
    • Highland Plantation (now The Hub) bus stop (the bus stop that is not next to WalMart) at 7:00 p.m.
    • Milford + Gourrier (between El Cid + Embassy apartments) at 7:05 p.m.
    • The Oliver (4600 Burbank Road) the bus stop in front of the apartments at 7:10 p.m.
    • (For a long time we do not have anyone in Tigerland or Brightside who needs a ride. If you live there and need a ride… let us know.)
    • Tigerland (bus stop on Alvin Dark across street from store) at 7:15 p.m.
    • Brightside bus stop (across from Circle K gas station – outside The Blox) at 7:20 p.m.

Directions (from Louisiana State University – farther than usual this week):

  1. Drive southeast on Highland Road
  2. Turn left onto Lee
  3. Lee becomes College – stay on College
  4. Turn right onto Corporate
  5. After you cross Jefferson look for Palm Hills Boulevard which is the third road on the right
  6. Look for house 2242 on the right

Volunteer! at English Conversation – Friday June 16

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

Feed the hungry, save the animals, raise money for cancer research, and so on. Several years ago a graduate student from China said she was impressed by how much “volunteerism” is part of American culture. Many Americans give up time, money, and energy to help all sorts of different causes and organizations. Come learn and talk about volunteerism, practice your English, and learn about American culture at English Conversation this Friday June 16 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the home of:

Ro and Dawn Ryan
10348 Rustic Oak Drive, 70810

(Not completely sure this is the correct house. Rick has been here once.)

You can drive yourself or ask for a ride. Important note = Please contact us (email works best) by Thursday if you want to come to English Conversation and need a ride. Science! at English Conversation – Friday June 9

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

Scientific research! Who pays for it? How much do governments spend on scientific research? Too much? Not enough? Is this a good way to pay for it? This is a more “advanced” lesson. The topic and some of the vocabulary are a little more difficult. Come practice your English and learn more about American culture at English Conversation this Friday June 9 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the home of:

Jim and Missy Epperson

Bring your friend to social English Conversation – Friday June 2

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

We are doing something new. About three times a year (maybe Winter, Summer, Fall?) we will host a “social” English Conversation that emphasizes meeting people, knowing each other better, how Americans and internationals interact in social gatherings (wow that sounds like a sociology textbook), and bringing new friends to experience English Conversation. It will be like English Conversation and Welcome Party at the same time. There will be an English Conversation lesson but also more opportunities to meet, share, and talk. Come practice your English and learn more about American culture at English Conversation this Friday June 2 starting at 7:30 p.m. at in the “fellowship hall” at:

University Baptist Church (fellowship hall)
5775 Highland Road, 70808

Car crashes!?! at English Conversation – Friday May 7

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

Oh no! You experienced a car crash!?! We do not want that to happen to anyone – however it does happen sometimes. A car crash is stressful and confusing for Americans *and* internationals. What are some things you should do if that happens? [We might use a different topic. If we choose a different topic we will update the website and send another email Wednesday or Thursday.]

Come practice English and learn about American life and culture at English Conversation this Friday May 7 starting at 7:30 p.m. at =

If we do not hear receive an email from you… then we will assume you do not need a ride and a car will not come.

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

“In a world full of doggies, doggies run and play. They like to do doggie things, they like to do them all day…” (the World Full of Doggies song)

Why do human beings have pets? Why do we have zoos? How do Americans treat their pets? What pets do people have in other countries? Come practice English and learn about American life and culture at English Conversation this Friday April 7 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the home of =

Go to the doctor!?! at English Conversation – Friday March 31

Note = (1) Do not bring young children to English Conversation. We have good reasons for this rule. (2) If you have a name tag… bring it.

“My child does not feel well. Where can I take my child to see a doctor? How much will it cost? And why does America not have free health care?!?” The lesson will focus on (1) health insurance and (2) what you do when someone needs to see a doctor. Medical care and medical insurance can be confusing for Americans and especially for internationals. Come practice English and discuss going to the doctor (and how to pay for it) at English Conversation this Friday March 31 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the home of =
